  • Caring For Your Jewellery

    • Avoid Water Exposure: Do not swim or shower with your jewellery on. Chlorine, salt water, and natural hot springs can damage softer stones and metals like silver, gold, and copper.
    • Keep Away from Chemicals: Do not wear jewellery while applying hairspray, perfume, sunscreen, or hand lotion. Ensure these products are fully dried or absorbed before putting on your jewellery.
    • Proper Storage: Store jewellery separately to prevent scratching, especially between hard and soft stones.

Many people wear their wedding bands constantly without noticeable damage, primarily because diamonds, which are often used in wedding bands, are the hardest stones on the Mohs Hardness Scale. However, the stones in my jewellery are often more delicate and require more care.

    Cleaning Your Jewellery

    • Regular Cleaning: Most of my handmade jewellery can be cleaned with mild dish soap and warm water.
    • Rinse and Dry: Rinse jewellery well to remove any soap residue and dry thoroughly with a soft cloth. Ensure jewellery is completely dry before storing to prevent tarnish, especially for silver.
    • Avoid Harmful Methods: Do not use toothpaste, household chemicals, excessive heat, ultrasonic, or steam cleaners on handmade stone jewellery. Many stones have natural inclusions or are porous, making them susceptible to damage.

    Tarnish Removal

    • Use a Silver Polishing Cloth: Gently clean tarnished jewellery with a silver polishing cloth. Avoid silver dip cleaners, especially for jewellery with natural stones, as the chemicals can cause damage.

    Understanding Tarnish

All silver jewellery will eventually tarnish, including Sterling Silver. Sterling Silver may tarnish over time. Tarnishing is a natural process and does not indicate that the silver is fake.

    Stone Hardness and Care

    • Mohs Hardness Scale: Stones are rated on the Mohs Hardness Scale based on their resistance to scratching. Hard stones are higher on the scale, with diamonds at 10, while softer stones are lower.
    • Care for All Stones: Treat all stones as if they are delicate, regardless of their hardness on the Mohs scale. Even hard stones like emeralds can fracture due to natural inclusions.

    Porous and Soft Stones

The Mohs Hardness Scale only indicates scratch resistance, not other properties like porosity or softness. Stones such as pearls, opals, turquoise, amber, coral, and onyx may appear solid but can be porous and soft. Soaking these stones in water can lead to residue buildup and eventual damage.
